Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility profile of Bacteria isolated from mares suspected or not of endometritis

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the results of cytological examinations, bacteriological and antimicrobial susceptibility in vitro in 64 mares. Was evaluated the presence of bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Bacillus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Enterobacter sp., Staphylococcus spp., Serratia spp. and Pleomorphic gram + in healthy and diseased mares according to the cytologic and clinical. It was identified bacteria Shigella sp. and Edwarsiella tarda as possible indicators of a healthy uterus as these were only isolated in mares away from any signs that would indicate infection or inflammation of the uterus. However, microorganisms such as Protheus sp., Streptococcus b-hemolytic, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were diagnosed as causes of endometritis since only demonstrated in bacterial culture of mares patients. In vitro test for antibiotic sensitivity, enrofloxacin (100%), ampicillin (88.2%) and neomycin (76.5%) were the most effective drugs. This study emphasizes the need to perform cytological procedures when combined with the bacteriological positive cytologic profile and importance of in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility to determine antibiotic therapies.
